The Fairbanks Organizing Committee unveiled the community’s choice for the theme for the 2014 Fairbanks Arctic Winter Games (AWG) bid on Wednesday, June 2nd at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center in downtown Fairbanks. The grand prize winner is Macy Possenti, whose winning theme is "Great Spirit, Northern Dreams". Possenti also submitted the second place entry "Lasting Culture, Enduring Spirit." Christi Cole had the third place entry "Arctic Edge."
Possenti expressed the following, “Being a past athlete of the Arctic Winter Games gave me the chance to choose a theme that I really felt enveloped the spirit of the Games. It didn’t matter if I was racing down the giant slalom course for snowboarding, cheering on my teammates, or meeting new people in the surrounding North; I felt an overpowering sense of passion emanating from all the participants. I chose ‘Great Spirit, Northern Dreams’ because it seems that whatever someone’s dream, it takes a great amount of determination and spirit in order to make those dreams a reality”
Luke Hopkins Mayor of the Fairbanks North Star Borough, Doug Isaacson Mayor of North Pole, FNSB Parks and Recreation staff, members of the Organizing Committee, and other residents were in attendance for the presentation. The grand prize was donated by Alaska Outdoor Rentals & Guides. The North Star Golf Club and Fairbanks Convention & Visitors Bureau also donated prizes to the second and third place finalists.
At the event, the new logo, developed by Jill Marshall of Marshall Arts Design, was also revealed. Marshall provided this interpretation of the logo: “As the spirit of the games rises like a bird taking flight, it carries the dreams of the participants to new heights. The bird combines many parts into a greater whole, echoing the diverse cultures attending the games. With hard work and determination, the participants shine like the evening stars as their dreams become reality.”
The Organizing Committee would like to thank all the residents that submitted theme ideas, and to congratulate Macy Possenti on her winning theme!
